It is with a heavy heart I share the news of a student’s recent passing. The student attended the Accelerated Learning Academy and was looking forward to graduating soon. They were beloved by family, teachers, and peers and will be missed tremendously.

We shared the news of the student’s passing with the school family today. Counselors from across Salt River Schools, as well as our partners from SRMPIC Behavioral Health Services, were present and available to help staff and students process their shock, sadness, and grief. These counselors are here to help anytime. If you have questions, please call your child’s school, or contact Dr. Vicky Corlett, Director of Student Support Services, at 480-362-2573 for more information about our counseling services.

We have lots of resources and don’t want anyone to feel like they are alone during this time. Remember, everyone reacts differently to losing a loved one. Here are some things that may help:

  • Encourage your child to feel and talk about their emotions. Let them know it is okay to feel sad, angry, confused, or even to feel nothing at all.
  • Reassure your child that they are safe and secure.
  • Explain truthfully, but gently, what has happened.
  • Offer warmth, affection and your physical presence.
  • Maintain the routine, stability, and security in your child’s life as much as possible.
  • Listen. Listen. Listen.

Losing a friend or family member is hard no matter the time of year, but may feel especially painful around the holidays. We encourage anyone who needs it to reach out and talk with someone, either from the schools or with a Community professional.

Plans are being made to celebrate the student’s life and support the family; once these plans are finalized we will share them with you. If you would like to donate bottled water or other beverages for the wake, please drop off your donation to the ALA office by end-of-business on Thursday, Dec. 19.

My deepest condolences to the family and friends of the student during this difficult time.
