The Salt River Schools Student Parent Handbook states that regular attendance is a key component for academic success at every grade level. Salt River Schools expects an attendance rate of at least 90 percent for all students. It is important for parents to recognize the direct relationship between academic success and regular class attendance. Students miss out on crucial learning opportunities that cannot be made up. Students miss lectures, class discussion, group activities, and one-on-one teacher/student interaction. The primary responsibility for attendance rests with parents.
To support Salt River School’s goal of maintaining a 90% attendance rate, the following procedures are in place to support ALA student attendance efforts:
- Student attendance is tracked daily and is taken in all class periods.
- Students are expected to sign in daily upon arrival to school. If a student leaves campus early, they must sign-out. If the student is a minor, the guardian (or list of approved adults) must sign the student out prior to leaving campus.
- Parents/guardians and/or adult students are expected to call the attendance line if the student is not going to be at school. The school should be contacted on the day of the absence. The attendance/front office phone number is 480-362-2130. Email is also encouraged. The following individuals can be emailed if a student is going to be absent from school:
- If a student is absent and there is no communication with the school, the parent/guardian and/or adult student will be contacted.
- Absences are considered either excused or unexcused. Details regarding excused absences can be found in the student and parent handbook under the attendance section.
- If your student is out for an appointment, it is encouraged to provide supporting documentation upon their return, i.e. doctor’s note, notification from court, etc.
- After three days of absences, a medical note is required for the absences to be considered medically excused.
- Any student who misses school for 10 consecutive school days will be dropped from enrollment, per Arizona law. Should a minor student be withdrawn, School and Community Relations (SCR) through Salt River Schools - truancy will be notified.
- If a student is absent for half of the class period, they are marked absent.
- Being late to class is considered a tardy. Five tardies equal one absence.
The following outlines the ALA’s intervention plan to mitigate chronic attendance issues:
- Attendance is documented daily by each period for every student. This documentation is reviewed regularly.
- All ALA staff reviews student attendance as part of weekly progress monitoring meetings. If attendance issues are a concern, the administrative team will check-in with the student and/or guardian to bring attention to attendance concerns and attempt to problem solve.
- Bi-weekly meetings are held between the ALA and School & Community Relations (SCR) – truancy. The intent of these meetings is to communicate concerns regarding student attendance and problem-solve/intervene with the family if additional supports are needed.
- At 3 unexcused/excused absences, the student is notified through Microsoft Teams.
- At 6 unexcused/excused absences, the student is notified through Microsoft Teams and a formal letter is sent home through the mail. SCR is also notified.
- At 8 unexcused/excused absences, a meeting is set up with the student and/or parent/guardian. The intent is to express the importance of students being in school while problem solving ways to improve attendance efforts.
- At 9 unexcused/excused absences, a truancy referral is submitted to SCR.
- At 15 unexcused/excused absences, another formal letter is sent home through the mail. SCR is also notified.
- The ALA has the right to withdraw students with chronic absenteeism who do not show efforts of improvement.
